The Penstroke Gallery is based out of Nashville, Tennessee and operated by long time friends and creative team, Jason Eskind and Daniel Hainsworth (two Harding Academy Alumni).
Only a few years ago, Daniel Hainsworth, a working actor in New York City and Nashville native, had a vision to create several large-scale abstract expressionistic pieces for his friends and family. Inspired by the works of Willem de Kooning, Kandinsky, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock, Daniel began to paint. Based upon the praise and unexpected demand for more pieces, Daniel partnered with fellow artist, savvy businessman, and best friend, Jason Eskind, and thus, J.D. Penstroke was born.
After transforming Jason’s garage into a studio, the paint began to flow. Within a few months, original Penstroke pieces had sold to private collectors across the Southeast, and more are featured in local corporate collections.
Jackson Pollock once said, “I don’t use the accident (because) I deny the accident.” This uninhibited freedom probably best describes the way in which J.D. Penstroke approaches an empty canvas. Through the focus of raw emotions and constantly evolving, frequently elaborate techniques, including dripping, smearing, slapping, shaking, and punching the canvas, we attempt to transfer these feelings into images.
